Vs. Matt is the tenth episode of the third season of Pokémon Tales: Mega. It aired 10/29/21.
Story[]
Max, Shauna and Tierno are in an underground bunker, in some form of barracks. They use the silence to heal up from their recent confrontation. Shauna tends to Meowstic and Diggersby, Tierno looks after Quilladin, Corphish and Spoink, while Max inspects Swellow and Salamence. Grimer sways happily.
Max: No lasting damage. These berries will help heal you up. Hopefully any battles we fight can be handled without you so you can rest.
Max gives berries to all his Pokémon, Grimer gulping it down.
Max: Grimer, you were awesome in rescuing Hoopa.
Grimer: Gri gri!
Shauna: So we can’t call Hoopa out to teleport us away?
Max pulls out the shrunken Pokéball, it blinking red.
Max: I caught it with a full party of Pokémon already. That means the Pokéball is locked until I can swap a Pokémon out.
Tierno: Which means we need to get to a Pokémon Center. But we don't even know where we are.
Max: Hm. Well there are people here. At least used to be. That’s my deduction at least by the beds.
Shauna: Do you think if we shout real loud someone will find us?
Max: It’ll probably be easier to go looking for someone then just calling out. But we don’t know what’s out there which is why I wanted to heal up first.
Tierno: Good call, yo. Now let’s go get ourselves out of here!
The group returns their Pokémon as they head for the exit door. As if on cue, the metal groans as it is open wide open. Two Team Aqua Grunts come in conversing.
Aqua Grunt 1: I’m telling you! Floating homes are going to be the future once Boss Archie finds Kyogre and raises the ocean! Look at Pacifidlog Town! That place is already primed for the future!
Aqua Grunt 2: Get real! Those guys will be overtaken by waves and sink! Humans will have to live up in the mountains when the sea levels rise up!
Aqua Grunt 1: Pffh! Whatever!
The grunts turn towards the beds, stopping when seeing the kids. Everyone stops and stares for a few moments.
Shauna: Hi! We were wondering if you could—
Aqua Grunt 1: Intruders! Intruders in the barracks!
Aqua Grunt 2: How’d they get in this deep without us seeing them?!
Tierno: Yo yo! We ain’t intruders! We were—
Max: Save it, Tierno. That’s Team Aqua! A criminal group. We’ll have to fight our way out.
The two grunts throw their Pokéballs, choosing Wingull and Corphish. Max opens his Pokéball to choose Heliolisk.
Max: Heliolisk, use Parabolic Charge!
Heliolisk opens its frills, sparking and fires streams of electricity. The two foes are shocked as are the grunts, all of them collapsing. Max leads the way in a sprint out of the room and down the hallway.
Shauna: Are you sure these guys are all bad?! They might’ve helped us out!
Tierno: They were talking about the region flooding! That sounds bad to me yo!
Max: Team Aqua wants a Legendary Pokémon that’ll give them control of the oceans! Plus, they may recognize me in Ian’s and Brendan’s efforts to stop them several years ago.
Shauna: (Grins) You sure had some big adventures with your brother!
Max: No time to waste! Incoming!
Several more grunts fill the hall, choosing Carvanha, Poliwhirl, Lombre and Sealeo. Tierno chooses Quilladin as Shauna chooses Pikachu. She looks down at her un-costumed body and tries to cover it up with her tail.
Shauna: No time for a costume! Use Thunder Shock!
Tierno: Quilladin, get through with Vine Whip!
Max: Heliolisk, blind them with Flash!
Heliolisk opens its frills and lets off a Flashing light, blinding the grunts and their Pokémon. This Flash of light overwhelms the security camera, catching the attention of the guard watching. He spins his chair around.
Aqua Grunt 3: Charon sir! There are intruders!
Charon lurks in the back of the room, grumbling as he evaluates data coming in for the sea charts.
Charon: Then tell Matt or something! All these idiots interrupting my work. Locating Kyogre is a more important use of my intellect then chasing delinquents!
Quilladin uses Vine Whip to strike through Pokémon while Pikachu fires Thunder Shock. Everyone is stunned as the group keeps going.
Tierno: Which way yo?
Max: I don’t know! I haven’t been here before! I never made it to any of Team Aqua’s bases!
Shauna: I say we ask for directions!
Max: Or find a control room so we can get a map!
The group rounds the corner, making their way into the mess hall. A handful of grunts stare at them, the group ready for battle.
Matt: HELLO THERE!
Everyone stops and looks at the end of the hall, Matt stuffing his face with mashed potatoes. He wipes his face as he stands up, howling.
Matt: I AM MATT OF TEAM AQUA! WHO ARE YOU?!
Max: I don’t this one. If we don’t keep moving, they’ll pin us.
Shauna: But he seems genuine. A hello wouldn’t hurt.
Shauna steps forward.
Shauna: HI THERE! I’M SHAUNA! We ended up here somehow and we were just looking for the exit.
Matt: OH OKAY! I THOUGHT YOU WERE NEW RECRUITS!
Shauna: No, sorry!
Matt: BUMMER! THAT MEANS I HAVE TO CRUSH YOU!
Matt throws his Pokéball, choosing Poliwrath.
Poliwrath: WRATH!
Matt: BODY SLAM!
Poliwrath takes off running at them, leaping belly first.
Tierno: Quilladin, Belly Drum to Rollout!
Quilladin glows red as it pounds its belly, then rolls forward with Rollout. The two attacks hit as Quilladin goes crashing into the steel wall, denting it.
Tierno: That was our strongest attack yo!
Max: Gallade, use Leaf Blade!
Max throws his Pokéball, choosing Gallade. Gallade dashes forward forming a green energy blade over its arm.
Matt: NOW WE’RE TALKING! POLIWRATH, USE STORM THROW!
Poliwrath jumps into the air, Gallade pursuing. Leaf Blade is caught as Poliwrath spins like a vortex, Gallade helpless as they fall and slammed into a table. A white flash blinds the room as the table snaps clean in half with Gallade defeated.
Shauna: Ah! That’s too powerful!
Max: Heliolisk, use Flash!
Heliolisk unleashes a Flash, blinding the entire room. When the light fades the group is gone.
Matt: HA! THAT WAS FUN! TOO BAD THEY RAN! LET’S FIND THEM SO I CAN BEAT THEM UP!
Everyone rushes out of the cafeteria, with Max and the others hiding behind the ruined table. They wait until everyone else is gone then sigh with relief.
Tierno: That was crazy, yo.
Shauna: You weren’t kidding about these guys.
Max: If we would’ve fought him before, then we would’ve lost. We can’t beat him fair and head on. What we need is a power boost. A way to weaken it while powering ourselves up.
Shauna: Do you think he’d let us go if we won?
Max: Hm. He does seem simple and honorable. The trick is that his boss doesn’t interfere.
Shauna: In that case I have a great idea!
End Scene
Team Aqua Grunts search the hallways for the intruders when some music begins playing. They make their way to the source as they find Tierno dancing with Vivillon, Corphish and Spoink.
Tierno: Yo yo everyone! Come join in! This is the dance off of the century! You think you got the moves?! Then bring it yo!
One of the grunts shrugs his shoulders, choosing Lombre. The two begin a samba dance as another grunt hits him. That grunt steps back as they choose their Corphish, Carvanha, Poliwhirl, Sealeo and Wingull. The group fires water attacks, pushing Tierno’s Pokémon back with lesser damage.
Tierno: Thank goodness for Friend Guard. Now we gotta keep them occupied! Spoink, Confuse Ray! Corphish, use Bubble! Vivillon, Gust!
Spoink lets off a pink Confuse Ray, stunning everyone. Corphish fires Bubble waves sped up by Gust, bombarding the grunts.
Matt and Poliwrath make their way towards the music, met in the hallway by Max and Shauna.
Max: Hello Matt. My name is Max and you know Shauna. We challenge you to a battle.
Shauna: 2-on-1! If we win, you let us leave the base.
Matt: HA! THAT SOUNDS FUN! I ACCEPT! POLIWRATH!
Poliwrath steps forward as Max chooses Grimer. Shauna opens her Pokéball, revealing PH.D Pikachu.
Matt: YOUR PUNY POKÉMON LOOKS ADORABLE IN THAT NERD OUTFIT!
Shauna: I don’t know if there’s enough of a compliment to thank him.
Max: Like we discussed. Grimer, use Sludge Wave!
Grimer spews a Sludge Wave as Poliwrath freezes it with Ice Beam. It shatters its way through to Body Slam Grimer, forming a wall with Acid Armor. Grimer sinks down, taking heavy damage.
Max: Grimer, use Memento!
Grimer glows with a black aura, phasing through Poliwrath to weaken it. Grimer falls defeated.
Matt: HEY! THAT WASN’T SPORTSMAN LIKE! WE NEED A LONGER BATTLE! CHOOSE ANOTHER POKÉMON!
Max: (Returns Grimer) If you say so. Heliolisk!
Max throws his Pokéball, choosing Heliolisk.
Heliolisk: Lisk!
Shauna: Our time to shine! Pikachu, use Electric Terrain!
Max: Then Heliolisk, Parabolic Charge!
PH.D Pikachu sparks and lets off Electric Terrain which fills the hallway. Heliolisk powers up from the charge and fires a powerful Parabolic Charge. Poliwrath takes the attack and breaks it by flexing its muscles.
Matt: POLIWRATH, USE STORM THROW!
Shauna: Hold Hands to Thunder Shock!
Max: Then use Razor Wind!
Poliwrath reaches out hand first as PH.D Pikachu jumps and grabs it. She shakes Poliwrath’s hand in a fierce handshake, worthy of a professional. Poliwrath finds itself obliging the situation while Heliolisk builds up wind. It fires Razor Wind as PH.D Pikachu abandons the shake, knocking Poliwrath back.
Max: Use Flash!
Shauna: Follow with Thunder Shock!
Matt: NOT AGAIN! FIRE ICE BEAM!
Poliwrath fires Ice Beam, the Flash of light causing it to miss. Thunder Shock hits and stuns Poliwrath.
Shauna: Great work! Thunder Shock again!
Max: Parabolic Charge!
Matt: PUSH THROUGH WITH BODY SLAM!
Poliwrath pushes belly first through the Electric attacks, prepared to strike. It stops inches away from paralysis, forcing it to take the entirety of the attacks.
Max: Now finish it! Parabolic Charge!
Shauna: Hold Hands!
Matt: STORM THROW!
PH.D Pikachu takes Poliwrath in the handshake. Poliwrath pulls back this time, spinning like a cyclone. Heliolisk fires Parabolic Charge, hitting Pikachu and becoming absorbed through her tail.
Max: That’s a Lightning Rod ability! Quick, attack while they’re still connected!
Shauna: Right! Pikachu, use Thunder Shock!
Pikachu lets off Thunder Shock, injuring Poliwrath but not stopping Storm Throw. Pikachu crashes into Heliolisk, a white flash blowing them both back. Pikachu is defeated while Heliolisk stays standing.
Max: Heal with Parabolic Charge!
Heliolisk fires Parabolic Charge, shimmering with healing energy as Poliwrath pants heavily. The Electric Terrain fades away.
Matt: YOU FOUGHT WELL! BUT WE WIN NOW! POLIWRATH, USE BODY SLAM!
Max: Heliolisk, use Flash!
Poliwrath leaps as Flash covers the field. Poliwrath slams the ground and gets up rubbing its head. Max and Shauna are gone.
Matt: WHAT?! THEY FLED AGAIN?!
Max, Shauna and Heliolisk catch up with Tierno, them making a mad dash towards the exit.
Tierno: I handled most of the grunts, but more are gonna come!
Shauna: That door looks big and sturdy!
Max: Then we’ll just have to break it! Salamence, Double Edge!
Max opens a Pokéball, choosing Salamence. It roars as it speeds forward, crashing into the metal doors. It roars as it shoves through, flying into open air. The group comes to a stop when finding it was a drop out into the ocean.
Tierno: Was this a cave on an island yo? Or rock formation?
Max: (Face palms) How did I not consider this?! They love the water, so of course their base would be surrounded by it!
Matt: DISHONORABLE MAX AND SHAUNA!
The group looks back, seeing Matt leading a horde of grunts.
Matt: COME BACK AND TAKE DEFEAT LIKE A TRAINER!
Max: No time to argue! Salamence, I need you to fly us out of here!
Salamence: (Roars!)
Shauna: Last time, it wouldn’t take all three of us!
Max: Yeah I know. Swellow!
Max opens a Pokéball, choosing his shiny Swellow. She sparkles as she comes out.
Max: Swellow, we need to fly out of here. Do you think you could carry Shauna?
Swellow tilts her head in confusion, then sizes Shauna up. She then takes note of the enemies approaching, nodding in haste.
Max: Then let’s hope there’s land nearby!
Max and Tierno mount Salamence, unhappily flying off. Swellow swoops around and clutches Shauna by the shoulders as she follows after them.
Shauna: Whoo-hoo! This is awesome!
Matt stops the grunts at the edge of the base, watching them go.
Matt: THEY CANNOT ESCAPE ME AT SEA!
Matt draws a Pokéball when the intercom buzzes.
Charon: (Over intercom) Matt, return to the control center at once.
Matt: BUT CHARON! THEY ARE GETTING AWAY!
Charon: They do not matter in the large scheme of things. Archie reported that our data was fruitful. We have located Kyogre.

- The Team Aqua base is based off the ones in the games; the one off the coast of Lilycove City.
- This episode was used as both a break from the intense battle against Zinnia and to feature Team Aqua again.
- Matt is shown to be incredibly powerful, defeating Max's Gallade in one hit.
- Charon reveals that he's found Kyogre.
- With Ph.D Pikachu featured, all the cosplay Pikachu costumes have appeared.
