Pop Star R1 and R2 Tag Tournament 2

R1 and R2 Tag Tournament 1 is the tenth episode of the first season of University of PocketMon. It aired 7/8/20.

Story[]

Classes R1 and R2 are gathered at the indoor battle arenas. The Professors Nanu, Lenora, Erika, Thorton and Chuck are all there. Sahara’s eyes sparkle as she takes it all in.

Sahara: Incredible! This looks like a real stadium!

Claire: You haven’t been in here yet?

Sahara: Nope! The battlefields were always crowded or I had to share the field with Kaido. (Shudders) He really creeps me out.

A hissing noise occurs, Sahara screeching and hiding behind Claire. Kaido stares menacingly at the two before walking off.

Sahara: See?

Claire: Okay, you’re overreacting just a bit.

Lenora: Alright little Poliwags! Line it up!

The students line up as Thorton brings out two boxes.

Thorton: You will draw lots to determine who your partner will be for this tournament. You’ll pick a number and match it to the person from the other class with the same number.

Erika: Once that is done, you’ll get a few minutes to talk with your partner and learn about their Pokémon and battle styles, composing a plan for the first match.

Nanu: The battles will be one at a time because this is a learning opportunity. Everyone should watch other battles to learn strengths, weaknesses, and how your classmate’s battle style can compliment your own.

Bede: This is pointless. I could defeat all of you solo.

Chuck: We shall see. I shall be referee because I prefer to be up close and personal when performing evaluations! Now choose your number and find your partner!

The classes form two lines and each draw their numbers. Sahara goes through, drawing number 14.

Sahara: 14! Who’s got 14?

No one responds as the students finish drawing numbers. Megumi makes her way over to Sahara, showing off her number 14.

Sahara: Yay! I get paired with my new friend! Our bonds of friendship will be intensified through the heat of battle!

Megumi: Uh, great. But to be honest, I’m not that good a battler.

Sahara: That’s okay! We’ll collaborate on our teams, then figure out the pairings that best support each other!

Nanu: Everyone paired up? Five minutes starts now!

End Scene

Five minutes have gone by, the students reconvening.

Erika: I hope you all used this time wisely. Now, the battles will be conducted in number order. So the team that is team 1 will battle team 2. 3 will battle 4 and so on.

Lenora: If you’re battling, get on out there! Everyone else, take a seat in the bleachers!

The students sit down as the trainers on the field get set. Bernadetta and Jewelry face down against Seifer and Meddy.

Bernadetta: Oh, why did I have to go first?! And with you out of all people!

Jewelry: Quit bellyaching! (Bites into donut) I expect you to pull your weight!

Meddy: I hate working with you, but if you keep to our strategy then we’ll manage.

Seifer: Shut up and keep in your lane. I only need you to heal when necessary.

Chuck: Tag battle begin!

Jewelry: Raticate!

Bernadetta: Kecleon!

Seifer: Passimian!

Meddy: Comfey!

The four throw their Pokéballs, choosing Alolan Raticate, Kecleon, Passimian and Comfey.

Jewelry: Raticate, use Hyper Fang!

Seifer: Passimian, use Brick Break!

Raticate leaps as its front teeth clash with Passimian’s chop, the two repelling each other.

Jewelry: Coward! Attack!

Bernadetta: (Fearing for life) Ah! Kecleon, use Shock Wave!

Kecleon’s stripe shines yellow as it fires an electric arrow at Passimian, striking it. Passimian skids back.

Seifer: Healer!

Meddy: Quit yelling at me! Comfey, heal them with Floral Healing.

Comfey releases energy flowers, which blossom and heal Passimian.

Erika: It seems that Seifer and Meddy have been able to come to an unsteady truce.

Thorton: Meddy isn’t physically strong while Seifer is. While Seifer charges head first without thought of counter attacks, allowing Meddy to heal them.

Seifer: Bulk Up then Close Combat!

Jewelry: Stockpile then Crunch!

Passimian Bulks up as Raticate eats and Stockpiles. Passimian pounds into Raticate as it Crunches into its shoulder. Passimian skids back from the impact.

Jewelry: Coward, attack! Raticate, use Swallow!

Bernadetta: Ah! Kecleon, use Shadow Sneak!

Raticate Swallows its Stockpile, healing partially from the damage.

Bede: Stockpile Swallow combo, huh? Was it her who attacked before?

Kecleon’s shadow extends across the field, rising and scratching Passimian repeatedly.

Meddy: Comfey, use Floral Healing!

Comfey heals Passimian, it raring to go.

Meddy: At this rate we’re just matching each other! We need to try a combination!

Seifer: I told you to stay out of my way! Passimian, go for that Kecleon with Close Combat!

Bernadetta: Ah! Why me?! Hide with Camouflage!

Jewelry: Now get them with Hyper Fang!

Kecleon cowers and Camouflages, disappearing as Passimian punches the ground. Raticate appears and bites into it with Hyper Fang, Passimian skidding back with heavy damage.

Meddy: Seifer, get ready to attack! Comfey, use Vine Whip!

Seifer: Just stick to healing!

Comfey extends a vine as it whips across the field. Raticate dodges but Kecleon is tripped and falls, becoming visible with a green coloring.

Seifer: Brick Break!

Passimian nails Kecleon with Brick Break, it launched back glowing orange.

Meddy: Your Color Change ability activated, making it a Fighting type now. It’ll be weak to our Draining Kiss!

Jewelry: Must I do everything?! Take that flower out with Hyper Fang!

Seifer: Not a chance. Close Combat!

Passimian pounds through Raticate, defeating it.

Bernadetta: Ah! Fury Swipes!

Kecleon blindly swings Fury Swipes, Comfey dodging and striking with Draining Kiss. Kecleon has its energy drained and is defeated.

Chuck: The winners are Seifer and Meddy!

Meddy: Alright!

Meddy turns for a high five, Seifer facing away.

Seifer: Next time you get in my way, I won’t hold back.

Meddy: Honestly?! We won because I took some initiative!

Nanu: No points for teamwork. But Meddy does get some appropriate action credit.

Lenora: Considering her career goal is to become a Pokémon Nurse, that’s a good trait to have.

Chuck: Next up! Teams 3 and 4!

Sam and Kaido stand across from Golbat-Man and Sarada.

Sam: Let us give this our best go, Kaido!

Kaido: Tsssss. You’re too noisy.

Sarada: So we’re against these two. Kaido prefers forcing opponents into long, drawn out battles.

Golbat-Man: Where Sam provides support.

Chuck: Battle begin!

Sam: Charjabug!

Kaido: Mareanie.

Golbat-Man: Woobat.

Sarada: Blitzle!

The four trainers choose their Pokémon. Charjabug’s Battery activates and charges Mareanie.

Kaido: Poison Sting.

Sam: Use Discharge!

Golbat-Man: Use Psycho Cut.

Sarada: Charge in with Spark!

Charjabug releases streams of electricity, shocking Mareanie. Blitzle charges covered in Spark and absorbs part of the Discharge, Motor Drive speeding it up as it rams Mareanie. Mareanie strikes Blitzle at close range with Poison Sting barbs, it kidding back. Woobat flaps its wings and fires psychic batarangs, cutting through and canceling Discharge.

Kaido: Mud Shot.

Sarada: Quick! Me First!

Sam: String Shot!

Golbat-Man: Air Slash.

Mareanie inhales as Blitzle’s eyes glow red, scanning Mareanie. Blitzle spews Mud Shot, hitting Mareanie hard. Charjabug spews String Shot, trapping Blitzle’s feet. Mareanie spews Mud Shot as a batarang Air Slash arch around and destroys it. Kaido hisses harshly.

Kaido: Damn pest.

Sam: Allow me to weaken it! Charjabug, use Eerie Impulse!

Charjabug emits an Eerie Impulse, weakening Woobat’s power.

Kaido: Tssss. Poison Sting.

Sarada: Blitzle! Burn the webs with Flame Charge! Then hit Charjabug!

Blitzle moves its legs up and down, building power and flames igniting. It burns through the Strong Shot and charges at Charjabug. Mareanie fires Poison Sting shots at it from the side, oozing with poison as it rams Charjabug.

Sarada: Shoot! Poison!

Kaido: Venoshock.

Mareanie forms a green glob on the tip of a tentacle, serving it like a tennis ball. Venoshock hits Blitzle and erupts in green electricity, launching Blitzle back.

Sarada: I wasn’t cautious enough of their Merciless ability!

Golbat-Man: I will counter any poison attacks going forward. Woobat, Psycho Cut.

Kaido: Recover.

Sam: Use Discharge!

Sarada: Use the electricity for Flame Charge!

Mareanie glows green as it shimmers with healing energy. Charjabug fires Discharge streams that shock Mareanie and head for their foes. Blitzle uses the Discharge to speed up and it rams Charjabug with Flame Charge, defeating it. Woobat counters the other streams with Psycho Cut, with more breaking through and striking Mareanie.

Kaido: Venoshock.

Mareanie serves more Venoshock globs, them having curved shots around the field.

Golbat-Man: Psycho Cut.

Woobat dives down and intercepts the Venoshock balls with Psycho Cut, it being a fierce battle. Blitzle suddenly appears behind Mareanie.

Sarada: Checkmate! Use Spark!

Blitzle rams Mareanie with Spark, defeating it.

Chuck: The winners are Sarada and Bruce!

Golbat-Man: I’m Golbat-Man.

Chuck: Sorry. Golbat-Man! Teams 5 and 6 come out!

Weiss and Hunk take to field as do Bow and Akiza.

Bow: Alright Akiza. Weiss is powerful with Ice type attacks. But they’re useless if they can’t hit us. So we need to be fast and evasive.

Akiza glares at Bow, him frightened a bit.

Bow: Work with me just a little bit?

Hunk: Man, I do not envy that guy. Though she isn’t mean, Akiza is the most despondent person in the class.

Weiss: Doesn’t matter. I know for a fact that I can take them down.

Hunk: Yeah, you mean we.

Weiss: If you want to help, just be the support like agreed.

Chuck: Battle begin!

Weiss: Mr. Mime!

Hunk: Swirlix!

Bow: Rowlet!

Akiza: Roselia.

The throw their Pokéballs and choose their Pokémon. Roselia’s long grass skirt reveals it is female.

Akiza: Roselia: Ingrain then Petal Blizzard!

Roselia glows as it rises above the ground with large thick Ingrain roots for legs. She points her flowers forward and fires barreling streams of petals, tearing through Rowlet as they approach the opponents.

Weiss: Mr. Mime, Reflect!

Hunk: (Freaking out) This is bad! Use Cotton Guard!

Mr. Mime holds its hands out, the glyph forming Reflect. Swirlix expands out a Cotton Guard as they both take the attack with limited damage.

Bow: If they’re protected against physical moves, then try a Swift attack!

Rowlet swings a wing down, firing star pointed arrows at the foes.

Weiss: Power us up! Mr. Mime, Icicle Spear!

Hunk: How do I, oh! Use Fairy Wind!

Mr. Mime’s glyph fires Icicle Spears as Swirlix releases Fairy Wind which speeds them up. Swift and Icicle Spear cancel each other out, Bow scowling.

Bow: I didn’t think that Weiss would work so willingly with another trainer. Akiza, we have to work together in order to—

Akiza: No! Stay out of our way! Fire Extrasensory!

Hunk: Swirlix, use After you on Mr. Mime!

Weiss: Mr. Mime, ice them over with Ice Beam!

Swirlix glows white as it passes Mr. Mime by, the aura transferring. Mr. Mime’s glyph speed accelerates as it fires Ice Beam while Roselia prepares its attack.

Bow: Rowlet! Tackle!

Rowlet intercepts Ice Beam’s trajectory, kicking its foot that fires air pressure that slightly redirects Ice Beam. Rowlet is scraped by the attack and drops, its right side frozen over.

Bow: Our ability is Long Reach, so we can fire physical attacks off like an arrow! We may not work together, but I won’t let you hit Roselia!

Roselia fires Extrasensory, the golden rings pinning Swirlix to the ground.

Weiss: Ugh! Mr. Mime, surround them and use Icicle Spear!

Glyphs travel across the ground, Mr. Mime skating along them and firing Icicle Spear. Rowlet is bombarded and defeated while the attack pounds into Roselia and cuts through the Ingrain. Roselia still heals from Ingrain.

Akiza: Use Petal Blizzard!

Hunk: Hidden Power rapid fire!

Swirlix inhales and spews Hidden Power spheres like bullets, blasting Roselia and stunning her long enough to distract her. Glyphs travel up Ingrain with Mr. Mime stopping in Roselia’s face.

Weiss: Ice Beam!

Mr. Mime thrusts its palm forward as Ice Beam blazes through it. Roselia is cut off the Ingrain as she falls defeated.

Chuck: The winner is Weiss and Hunk!

Hunk: Whoo! That was way too scary. Next time can I not be the bait?

Chuck: Teams 7 and 8!

Rikochet rolls his shoulders as Geo stands vacant minded. Chumley looks nervous as Rolan pats him on the back with a huge grin on his face.

Rolan: Don’t worry about it! I’ll be there to cover you no matter what happens!

Chumley: Gee, thanks Rolan.

Rikochet: Alright amigo! Let’s show them our signature tag team move!

Geo: That lame idea you spouted?

Rikochet: Hey, at least I contributed to the planning!

Geo: Whatev. Just follow my lead.

Chuck: Battle begin!

Rikochet: Phanpy!

Geo: Minior.

Chumley: Go Shroomish!

Rolan: Pikachu!

The four trainers choose their Pokémon. Pikachu’s tail reveals it is male.

Geo: (Waves hand indiscriminately) Minior, use Self-Destruct.

Minior floats to the middle of the field, its body filling with white energy.

Rikochet: Ay caramba! Use Endure!

It then Self-Destructs, the explosion desolating the field. Everyone in the crowd gasps as the shock wave blows through them.

Nanu: Not subtle, is he?

Lenora: The boy easily aced the entry exams into the program, but has shown no real interest in battling at all! Can’t kick him out with his grades, though!

When the smoke clears, Minior and Shroomish are down. Phanpy pants heavily but is still on its feet, while Pikachu lies on his stomach struggling to stand.

Rikochet: What about our combination move?! I thought we would fight them together!

Geo: I decided to go with this one instead. With Phanpy’s Endure, it was impossible for me to knock it out. Not surprised that Rolan’s Pokémon is still standing.

Rolan: Pikachu didn’t want to let me down! Isn’t that right, buddy?

Pikachu: Pika pika!

Rikochet: So it’s a race to land the finishing blow! Phanpy, use Rollout!

Rolan: Pikachu, use Quick Attack!

Phanpy curls up and rolls forward as Pikachu speeds across the field covered in white energy. The two go to collide when Pikachu evades and rams Phanpy from the side. Phanpy slides to the side defeated.

Chuck: The winners are Chumley and Rolan!

Rolan: Yay! (Claps hands with Chumley) We won!

Chumley: That didn’t feel like a win. I certainly didn’t do anything.

Rolan: Don’t let this discourage you. In the next battle you’ll get your chance to shine!

Chuck: Teams 9 and 10!

Thalia and Korra walk out, bumping forearms up to each other. Claire and Nia take their positions too.

Claire: To think we’re going against Thalia. She is cool and tough.

Nia: If she’s strong enough to keep up with Korra, we’re in for a long fight.

Chuck: Battle begin!

Thalia: Pincurchin!

Korra: Marshtomp!

Claire: Stonjourner!

Nia: Falinks!

The four throw their Pokéballs and choose their Pokémon. Stonjourner’s Power Spot radiates on Falinks.

Korra: Marshtomp, Muddy Water!

Thalia; Pincurchin, Discharge!

Marshtomp swirls its arms and thrusts them forward, a wave of Muddy Water forming and washing forward. Pincurchin fires Discharge into the Muddy Water, electrifying it.

Nia: First Impression!

Claire: Sandstorm!

Falinks quickly dashes, disappearing for a second ending up on the other side of the Muddy Water. Falinks goes and rams Pincurchin, it rolling back. Stonjourner shakes with Sandstorm, it forming a protective layering over Stonjourner as it takes the electrified Muddy Water.

Sahara: Aaaaah! (Gleaming) She used the Sandstorm style! That raised their Special Defense!

Claire: I got inspired by Sahara to teach this move for protection. Stonjourner, use Rock Throw!

Korra: Take it and use Rock Tomb!

Stonjourner fires jagged rocks at Marshtomp, who stomps the ground and holds its hand out. Rock Throw stops as Marshtomp stomps and motions its arms, crushing the rocks together. It fires it as a large boulder into Stonjourner. Sandstorm buffs Pincurchin and Falinks.

Claire: She redirected our attack!

Korra: Boom! I took you on earth bending style!

Thalia: Pincurchin, use Zing Zap!

Nia: Falinks, block it with Rock Smash.

Korra: Icy Wind!

Pincurchin spins with an electric ring as Falinks glows brown to attack. Marshtomp breathes Icy Wind, it freezing the water scattered on the field as Falinks slips. Zing Zap hits Falinks and knocks it back. Pincurchin and Falinks are buffed.

Korra: Rock Tomb!

Marshtomp stomps the ground, a boulder raising out. Marshtomp punches forward to launch it.

Nia: Falinks, Rock Smash!

Claire: Stomp!

Thalia: Bubble Beam!

Falinks breaks Rock Tomb with Rock Smash as Stonjourner raises its foot to Stomp into them. Pincurchin fires Bubble Beam, parrying Stomp and forcing Stonjourner back. Pincurchin and Falinks are buffed by Sandstorm.

Nia: We need a power up. Falinks, No Retreat!

The Falinks troopers spread out as they all glow with red aura.

Nia: Claire, can you give me an opening?

Claire: I’ll do my best! Stonjourner, use Body Press!

Nia: Falinks, Rock Smash!

Korra: Please. (Punches fist) I can take anything. Marshtomp, Protect!

Thalia: Pincurchin, Zing Zap!

Stonjourner glows orange as it falls down towards Marshtomp. Marshtomp makes motions and raises an earth dome around itself, Stonjourner crashing into it. Zing Zap clashes with Rock Smash, the two straining and blasting each other back. Stonjourner begins to stand back up as Protect and Sandstorm fades.

Korra: Oh, you’re going down. Muddy Water!

Marshtomp surrounds itself in Muddy Water and whips Stonjourner in the face, causing it to tumble over.

Claire: Stonjourner!

Falinks’ powerful aura fades, leaving it shocked.

Thalia: Stonjourner is down! Nice shot!

Korra: Oh, you haven’t seen anything yet. Rock Tomb!

Nia: We’ll break it again with Rock Smash!

Thalia: Really? Then we’ll get you with Bubble Beam!

Falinks prepares to attack as its distracted by Bubble Beam. Marshtomp stomps up boulders from the ground surrounding Falinks, taking out the troopers then the brass. Falinks tries to stand up but the platoon stays down.

Chuck: Thalia and Korra win!

Korra: Oh! You guys got owned!

Thalia and Korra high five as Claire and Nia returns their Pokémon.

Lenora: Korra may be brash, but her strength is probably one of the strongest in the two classes.

Thorton: If we’re talking raw power, I’d put her second. Maybe third.

Chuck: Teams 11 and 12!

Tenya and Mai take their positions across from Bede and Sokka.

Sokka: You can relax now. (Stretches) With me on this side, victory is pretty much assured.

Mai: (Flirtatiously) Oh, Sokka! You are so manly! There is no way that I could be a match against you!

Sokka: (Ego stroked) Darn right!

Tenya: What are you doing? Encouraging the enemy?

Mai: (Whispers) He may be smart, but he’s an idiot. A little charm is all it takes to throw him off his game.

Tenya: So you are attempting to sabotage them?! Unacceptable! Battles must be engaged with integrity and honor! Sokka! Ignore everything she said!

Sokka: (Acting superior) I’m well aware that she thinks she’s got the best of me. But there is nothing that can distract this sharp mind from victory!

Bede: Dear Arceus, I’m going to lose with this idiot.

Chuck: Battle begin!

Tenya: Rotom!

Mai: Spritzee!

Bede: Ralts!

Sokka: Basculin!

The four throw their Pokéballs and choose their Pokémon. Rotom is in Mow form while Basculin has a blue stripe.

Sokka: Basculin, use Aqua Jet!

Tenya: Rotom, use Electro Ball!

Basculin shoots forward in water as Rotom revs its engine and charges forward. It veers off and fires Electro Ball, blasting Basculin.

Mai: Now Spritzee, use Attract!

Sokka: Ah! Basculin is male! I forgot about that!

Bede: Of course you did. Ralts, Ally Switch then Psyshock!

Spritzee winks and fires energy hearts, as Basculin glows and swaps positions with Ralts. Ralts is hit by Attract, being immune. Ralts then fires a purple beam of psychic energy.

Tenya: Substitute!

Rotom revs as an energy lawnmower continues forward, intercepting and blocking Psyshock.

Mai: AW, thank you Tenya sweetie! (Looks to Bede) So your Ralts is female too.

Bede: Considering that you tried to infatuate Sokka, I figured you relied on wily charm instead of actual battle potential.

Mai: Oh, that’s just the set up. You want some real action? Spritzee, give them a Dazzling Gleam!

Spritzee rises up and glows, shining a rainbow light that damages Ralts and Basculin.

Tenya: Leaf Storm!

Through the Dazzling Gleam comes a Leaf Tornado, striking Ralts and blowing it back.

Sokka: Basculin, Liquidation!

Basculin’s tail glows blue, forming a water boomerang. It swings its tail and throws the Liquidation across.

Mai: Please! Dodge and use Gyro Ball!

Tenya: Charge for Astonish!

Spritzee dodges Gyro Ball as she spins with a silver ring forward. Rotom speeds forward as the Liquidation circles back. It strikes Rotom in the wheel, causing it to jam and it tumble in a crash.

Sokka: Bullseye!

Bede: Did you forget about the one actually coming at us? Ralts, use Psychic!

Ralts uses Psychic, stopping Spritzee in her track.

Mai: (Deviously) Sweet Scent.

Spritzee lets off a Sweet Scent, Ralts inhaling and relaxing. She lowers Psychic, as Spritzee rams it with Gyro Ball. Rotom gets itself back up.

Tenya: Attack with Leaf Storm!

Sokka: Aqua Jet!

Basculin charges with Aqua Jet as Rotom strikes it with Leaf Storm. Basculin is blown away defeated as the attack then hits Ralts. Ralts is defeated as well.

Chuck: Tenya and Mai win it!

Mai: Ahahahahaha! Just like that, those pathetic little boys fall to my foxy charm!

Tenya: While I am against your duplicitous tactics, I must thank you for helping with the win.

Bede: How could you be so naive?! They walked all over us!

Sokka: Hey, it’s not like they were easy opponents!

Chuck: Teams 13 and 14!

Kiba and Riku are raring to go while Sahara and Megumi face them.

Megumi: Are you sure about this?

Sahara: Positive. We’ll show off our friendship power!

Chuck: Battle begin!

Kiba: Growlithe!

Riku: Finneon!

Sahara: Helioptile!

Megumi: Popplio!

The four choose their Pokémon, everyone surprised by Sahara’s choice. Finneon is female due to gender differences.

Kiba: So she does own something besides that Palossand.

Riku: This makes Finneon’s type advantage useless. (Eyes Popplio) But not Finneon itself. Finneon, fire Water Pulse!

Kiba: Growlithe, Flamethrower!

Sahara: Use Parabolic Charge!

Megumi: Popplio, block it with Water Gun!

Helioptile’s Parabolic Charge blasts through a stream of water, electrocuting Finneon. Flamethrower and Water Gun collide, though Flamethrower breaks through and hits Popplio.

Megumi: Popplio, use Round!

Popplio begins to sing, its Liquid Voice echoing as it uses Round. Growlithe prepares itself as the attack is redirected at Finneon, her absorbing it.

Riku: You activated our Storm Drain. We absorb water attacks and power up our own attacks. Finneon, blast through with Silver Wind!

Finneon flaps its tail and fires a powerful Silver Wind, blowing Helioptile back.

Megumi: Sahara, I’m sorry! Our Liquid Voice ability makes all our singing attacks the Water type!

Sahara: Then we’ll just have to rely on other moves! Helioptile, use Bulldoze!

Helioptile hits the ground, energy bulging underneath and traveling. Popplio is rocked as Growlithe and Finneon are both hit.

Sahara: Ah! I didn’t know that’d hit you too!

Nanu: Ugh. Sahara is using moves she doesn’t know the full extent on. Though we haven’t covered double battle rules and tactics yet.

Thorton: You didn’t think to advance your curriculum to include this?! I intended on pointing out this oversight but since all the other teachers agreed…

Lenora: Wait, none of these kids have had official teachings in this?! When were you planning on starting?!

Nanu: (Yawns) I don’t know. A few weeks, maybe?

Lenora: Then we should’ve waited.

Nanu: Your student out there might not have been here. Besides, this is a good pre-lesson.

Kiba: Flamethrower!

Riku: Silver Wind!

Helioptile gets hit by Flamethrower as Popplio takes Silver Wind. Both Pokémon struggle to get up.

Megumi: Oh no! I’m so sorry, Sahara. I’m causing you to lose.

Sahara: We’re not done yet! Wait for an opening and strike. Helioptile, use Sandstorm!

Helioptile raises its frills as a Sandstorm whips up on the field. Helioptile runs through it, fading in and out of sight.

Kiba: So you’re going with a Sand Veil ability? I’ve been keeping up with that since meeting you. You can’t evade what we can track! Growlithe, use Odor Sleuth!

Growlithe starts sniffing the air, locating Helioptile approaching Finneon.

Kiba: Gotcha! Use Flamethrower!

Megumi: Not this time! Popplio, use Encore!

Popplio starts clapping, a white energy wave washing over Growlithe. Instead of charging Flamethrower, it sniffs the air again. Everyone besides Helioptile is buffed by the Sandstorm.

Kiba: What?!

Riku: They’ve restricted your move! Finneon, fire Water Pulse!

Sahara: Parabolic Shock!

Helioptile electrocutes Finneon, healing in the process as Finneon drops defeated.

Sahara: The Storm Drain is gone, Megumi! You’re up!

Megumi: Popplio, use Round!

Popplio sings in Round, the water sound washing over and blasting Growlithe back. Growlithe and Popplio are buffed by Sandstorm.

Megumi: Land the finishing blow!

Sahara: Right. Helioptile, Bulldoze!

Helioptile strikes with Bulldoze, it striking and defeating Growlithe and Popplio.

Chuck: Sahara and Megumi win!

Sahara: We did it!

Sahara hugs Megumi, her seeming slightly uncomfortable.

Megumi: It was thanks to you. All I did was mess up.

Sahara: But we worked well together! I know we can take that energy and channel it into our next match!

Chuck: Final battle of round one! Teams 15 and 16!

Helen and Garnet step up while Adrien and Reyla are on the other side.

Chuck: Begin!

Helen: Shuckle!

Garnet: Golett.

Adrien: Meowstic!

Reyla: Gloom!

The four trainers choose their Pokémon. Meowstic is male while Gloom is female.

Reyla: Be curful of Garnet. She specializes in punching with Iron Fist.

Adrien: An ability?

Reyla: Precisely.

Garnet: Golett, Shadow Punch.

Helen: Shuckle, use Infestation!

Shuckle covers the field with dark green energy bugs that wrap around Meowstic’s and Gloom’s feet. Golett charges forward with large shadow energy fists.

Reyla: Gloom, wisp them off with Acid! Then go fur yur Stun Spore!

Gloom shakes and scatters Acid, melting through the Infestation. She leaps into the air to dodge a Shadow Punch as she lets off Stun Spore. Golett sparks from paralysis as it turns to attack Meowstic.

Adrien: Meowstic, Barrier!

Meowstic twirls air which forms into a Barrier staff. He parries the Shadow Punch with the Barrier, the two trapped in place. Golett sparks from paralysis.

Adrien: There! Confusion!

Meowstic powers up the staff with Confusion, it shoving Golett off. Meowstic takes damage from the Infestation as Gloom lands.

Reyla: Now Moonblast!

Helen: Power Split!

Gloom charges a pink energy sphere as Shuckle glows red. The red energy affects Gloom as Moonblast shrinks in size. Gloom fires Moonblast that Golett punches through.

Garnet: Fire Punch.

Adrien: Meowstic, cover them!

Golett forms Fire Punch as Infestation traps Gloom again. Golett swings Fire Punch as Meowstic’s Barrier extends out, blocking the attack.

Reyla: Nice one!

Adrien: Thanks! Meowstic, go for Iron Tail!

Reyla: Gloom, Moonblast!

Meowstic uses its staff to push off the ground, getting free enough to swing Iron Tail. Golett raises its arm to block it as Gloom blasts it backwards with Moonblast. Both of them take damage from the Infestation.

Reyla: Cuver us! Gloom, use Moonlight!

Garnet: Attack while they’re healing! Use Fire Punch!

Helen: Use Rock Throw!

Adrien: Meowstic, power up Barrier with Confusion!

Golett charges with Fire Punch, Meowstic swinging its Barrier staff to let off a Confusion wave. Golett takes the hit then ducks, allowing Rock Throw to shoot through. Meowstic deflects the hits as Gloom glows moonlight white to heal.

Helen: Garnet, I think we need to switch from attacking Reyla to going after Adrien.

Garnet: Lead the charge then.

Helen: Huh?!

Garnet: Your idea, your lead.

Helen: Uh, fine! Shuckle, focus Infestation on Meowstic!

Garnet: Golett, Shadow Punch.

Infestation extends towards Meowstic while Golett charges at it.

Reyla: Gloom, clear a path with Acid!

Adrien: Then Meowstic, use Iron Tail!

Gloom burns through Infestation with Acid as Meowstic charges and parries Shadow Punch with Iron Tail. The attacks stall for a moment as Shadow Punch breaks through, defeating Meowstic.

Garnet: Fire Punch.

Reyla: Moonblast!

Gloom fires Moonblast, Golett punching it away. It charges for Fire Punch as Infestation traps Gloom. Fire Punch strikes and defeats Gloom.

Chuck: Helen and Garnet win!

Helen: Whew! We did it!

Garnet: Good suggestion.

Chuck: We’ll take a few minute break before determining the next round of battle!

Lenora: If you lost your match, you need to keep paying attention! This will be your lesson for the day!

Trivia[]

  • This tag team tournament was inspired by the Hearthome Tag competition.
  • The characters who were paired together were done at random by Random.org/lists.
  • As this episode featured the battle debut of many students in class R2, we get a sense of their personalities and how they battle. Most characters have influence from their series of origin on how they fight.
  • Rolan's Pikachu surviving an Explosion by "not wanting to let him down" is based off the raising of affection in the core games, such as using Pokémon Amie, Refresh or camping, to where they may survive an otherwise fatal hit.
  • Originally, Claire and Nia were going to win over Korra and Thalia. This was changed after realizing that those two were some of the stronger characters and would actually be able to work well together.
